For numerical semigroups with a specified list of (not necessarily minimal) generators, we describe the asymptotic distribution of factorization lengths with respect to an arbitrary modulus. In particular, we prove that the factorization lengths are equidistributed across all congruence classes that are not trivially ruled out by modular considerations.

Summary
The American Civil War was not a war of religion. The divisions within America’s most important denominations by the war’s beginning were the result of differing and patently sectional ideas about slavery, and not doctrine. The majority of the war’s nearly 4 million armed participants from both the North and the South were Protestants of one kind or another. Ethnically identifiable and predominantly Catholic regiments like those that made up the Union’s Irish Brigade were of a kind with the Confederacy’s 24th Georgia and 10th Louisiana Infantries. Of only 150,000 Jews in America in 1861, 6,000 Jewish men wore Union blue and likely 3,000 or so Confederate gray. Not only was America’s greatest existential crisis not a war of religion then, in many ways it was the very antithesis of a war of a religion. During the American Civil War, Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish Americans on both sides of the conflict made war against their fellow believers in spite of the overwhelmingly similar religious traditions they shared.

The introduction of glyphosate-resistant (GR) alfalfa offers a new weed management system for alfalfa establishment; however, alfalfa seeding rates are based on conventional cultivars. Determining optimum seeding rates allows forage producers to maximize yield, quality, and profitability with GR alfalfa. Field experiments were established in 2005 and 2006 to determine the effect of seeding rate and weed control on GR alfalfa yield, forage quality, and persistence up to 3 yr after establishment. Seeding rates of 4.5, 9.0, and 18 kg ha−1 were evaluated. Weed control methods during the seeding year included no herbicide, glyphosate applied once before the first harvest, and glyphosate applied once before the first harvest and then 7 to 10 d following subsequent harvests. Alfalfa yield was greater at higher seeding rates and when weeds were removed with glyphosate. Season forage yields were the greatest with the 18 kg ha−1 seeding rate and where no herbicide was applied. Weed biomass often was lower at the higher seeding rates and was 91 to 98% lower in the glyphosate treatments compared to the nontreated. Forage quality was not affected by seeding rate but varied by herbicide treatment depending on establishment year. Plant density increased with seeding rate and treatment effects persisted for three growing seasons. Herbicide treatment did not affect stand density as greatly as seeding rate and did not influence stand longevity.

The anticipated release of EnlistTM cotton, corn, and soybean cultivars likely will increase the use of 2,4-D, raising concerns over potential injury to susceptible cotton. An experiment was conducted at 12 locations over 2013 and 2014 to determine the impact of 2,4-D at rates simulating drift (2 g ae ha−1) and tank contamination (40 g ae ha−1) on cotton during six different growth stages. Growth stages at application included four leaf (4-lf), nine leaf (9-lf), first bloom (FB), FB + 2 wk, FB + 4 wk, and FB + 6 wk. Locations were grouped according to percent yield loss compared to the nontreated check (NTC), with group I having the least yield loss and group III having the most. Epinasty from 2,4-D was more pronounced with applications during vegetative growth stages. Importantly, yield loss did not correlate with visual symptomology, but more closely followed effects on boll number. The contamination rate at 9-lf, FB, or FB + 2 wk had the greatest effect across locations, reducing the number of bolls per plant when compared to the NTC, with no effect when applied at FB + 4 wk or later. A reduction of boll number was not detectable with the drift rate except in group III when applied at the FB stage. Yield was influenced by 2,4-D rate and stage of cotton growth. Over all locations, loss in yield of greater than 20% occurred at 5 of 12 locations when the drift rate was applied between 4-lf and FB + 2 wk (highest impact at FB). For the contamination rate, yield loss was observed at all 12 locations; averaged over these locations yield loss ranged from 7 to 66% across all growth stages. Results suggest the greatest yield impact from 2,4-D occurs between 9-lf and FB + 2 wk, and the level of impact is influenced by 2,4-D rate, crop growth stage, and environmental conditions.

Glyphosate-resistant (GR) alfalfa offers growers new options for weed control in alfalfa. One potential benefit of using GR alfalfa is increased longevity of an alfalfa stand under frequent harvests. It was hypothesized that GR alfalfa would have a greater longevity because of removal of weed interference with minimal crop injury. To study GR alfalfa yield, weed invasion, alfalfa stand persistence, and relative forage quality (RFQ), a field experiment with three weed control methods (no herbicide, glyphosate, and hexazinone) under two harvest frequencies (high and moderate) was established in August 2003 at the Michigan State University Agronomy Farm in East Lansing, MI. Forage yield of established alfalfa was not adversely affected by herbicide treatments. There were no differences in weed biomass between alfalfa treated with glyphosate and that treated with hexazinone, except in 2007. Average GR alfalfa stand density decreased approximately 90% (from 236 to 27 plant m−2), and yield decreased approximately 30% (from 11.04 to 7.87 Mg ha−1) during the 7-yr period (2004 to 2010) of the experiment. Stand density of GR alfalfa showed natural thinning during the 7-yr period regardless of harvest intensity or herbicide treatment. In most production years (4 out of 5 yr), relative forage quality of GR alfalfa was higher under a high-intensity harvesting system (4 to 5 harvests yr−1) than it was with a moderate intensity harvesting system (3 to 4 harvests yr−1). Relative forage quality was not affected by weed removal with herbicides in most years. Weed removal and harvest intensity in established GR alfalfa had no effect on stand persistence.

Philosophers often talk about and engage with ideas. Scientists, artists, and historians do, too. But what is an idea? In this paper, we first motivate the desire for an ontology of ideas before discussing what conditions a candidate ontology would have to satisfy to be minimally adequate. We then offer our own account of the ontology of ideas and consider various strategies for specifying the underlying metaphysics of the account. We conclude with a discussion of potential future work to be done on the ontology of ideas.

There is considerable evidence for the beneficial effects of dietary arginine, a conditionally essential amino acid that enhances anabolism and T-cell function. However, the safety and efficacy of higher doses of arginine supplementation following infection have not been investigated completely. These issues were explored therefore, in a murine model of malnutrition and infection. Severe protein malnutrition was induced by feeding mice for 6 weeks on an isoenergetic diet containing only 10 g protein/kg. Mice were then allowed to consume diets with normal amounts of protein (200 g/kg) with 50 g/kg provided as amino acid mixtures of glycine and arginine in which the arginine content ranged from 0 to 50 g/kg. During the repletion period a significant weight gain was noted in the groups fed on diets with either 10 or 20 g arginine/kg, but not in the group fed on the diet with 50 g arginine/kg, compared with the diet with 0 g arginine/kg. Mortality rates after infection with Salmonella typhimurium were not decreased by the addition of 10 or 20 g arginine/kg to the diet, and were in fact worsened by supplementation with 50 g arginine/kg. The results of the present study showed that not only are the beneficial effects of arginine supplementation after infection lost when high doses are administered, but also that these high doses become toxic. Mice fed on higher doses showed significant impairment of weight gain and an increase in mortality rates.

New results of radiocarbon dating of ca 100 decadal bristlecone pine samples from 6554 BC to 6084 BC and from 5820 to 5350 BC are presented. Using 3 new 2.5L counters filled to ca 3atm with carbon dioxide, high-precision dating has been performed by this laboratory for more than two years. Demonstration of the precision and accuracy of these counters is presented using ±2‰ measurements from the Spörer minimum period. For the older samples, ±3‰ measurements were made using ca 12-day counting times. Results are presented both as C age bp vs dendro-year BC, particularly for calibration purposes, and as Δ14C vs time.
